Right. There are 108 of you reading this. I expect one song/band suggestion from each of you, telling me what I should be listening to. Have at it.

Gary Jules' cover of Tears For Fears' "Mad World" is absolutely wonderful.

(On the other hand, avoid at all costs Ryan Adams' cover of "Wonderwall". It's almost physically painful.)

Very much agreed on both counts.

As for new music? I'm in a weird Rap/Hip-hop (with brief bouts of hard techno, Coltraine and Miles Davis) phase right now personally, but as I figure that won't work out for Dex, I's suggest Broadcast or for one of the best electronica-y jazz croups out there, St. Germain.

For some reason, on one of my trips here to Canada I noticed that in those times when there is nothing playing over the headsets (take off, landing, stuff like that) Air Canada played bits of St Germaine's Tourist album.

Who knows, man. Maybe it's something subliminal.

Alix Olson's "Checking My Pulse." Always gives me a grin and a mood-boost.

Also Poe's "Walk the Walk," which I discovered along with the best PotC songvid I've yet encountered (and I'll dig up a link if anyone's interested). So. Much. Fun.

I recently listened to and really liked "If I Had a Rocket Launcher" by Bruce Cockburn.

I'm also a big fan of "Ariel" by October Project.

Songs: Right now, I'm hooked on Muse's "Apocalypse Please", Lounge Against the Machine's cover of "Down With the Sickness", and God Lives Underwater's "From Your Mouth," which is an older rec.

Bands: I'm usually the last person to rec bands, since I like songs first and bands second, but I haven't heard anything from Jump Little Children I don't like.

I once had a friend who knew the guy in God Lives Underwater...very good band.

Orbital - Spare Parts Express
The Sickness - Lounge Against the Machine (I'm going to end up buying the Day of the Dead soundtrack just for that song).

The Hazzards - "Gay Boyfriend". I blame [livejournal.com profile] mice for infecting me with that one.

But I particularly love The Fenians, an Irish pub band out of Southern California. Being in The Griffin made me miss them all of a sudden.

I've heard a few Buck65 songs and enjoyed them. I take it the entire album is worth a spin?

I've been listening to a lot of bad cheesy pop lately... it happens to make good work-out music. So you probably don't want a lot of my suggestions....

But I'll give you some anyway... don't say I didn't warn you.

My current favorite cheesy pop: Superfabulous by BT (I think) from the album Emotional Technology (or the Win a Date with Tad Hamilton Soundtrack)
In honor of my birthday: The Happy Happy Birthday Song by The Arrogant Worms (Almost everything by them is hysterical.)
Another song by a talented and funny person: Hardware Store by Weird Al Yankovic (The skill it takes to compose, sing and perform this song amazes me.)

I have no idea what your tastes would run towards (vaguely punk, anyone?), so maybe you wanna just skip this. I'd understand. ;)

Ember Coast - So Far
Plain White T's - Stop

and Better Than Ezra's - One More Murder or Porcelain (just to keep a little integrity)

Ain't nothin' too new, but hey. It's probably stuff you're not listening to, so what's the difference, ey? Good luck with this, Dex!

For weird wacky fun, especially the trauma that is Rulf Harris singing a cover of "I touch myself". Any of the Andrew Denton Musical Challange CDs.

I really have no clue what you'd like, so I'll toss a few different ones out.

Metric: "Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?"

AFI: "Sing the Sorrow"

Foo Fighters: "One by One" and "There is Nothing Left to Lose"

Palmer: "Fall in June"

Billy Talent: "Billy Talent" (I've gone off them, but I know a few of my friends have picked them up)

Between, by Jerry Cantrell off Boggy Depot. Not new but the best love song I know.

Otherwise - anything by Gus & Frank. Great Australian band. Go here: www.gusandfrank.com/
Or anything by Morphine, but that's all old now because the lead singer is dead.

Song: "Welcome to Comfort" by Rob Longstaff. Nice bluesy acoustic song that's as cute as anything.

Band: Twitch, who play at my local and are Phil and my new obsession - rap/jazz/reggae fusion that makes you bop in your seat.

I'm copying both CDs and mailing them to you this week.

I'm always partial to Pink Floyd. There's lots of different eras of PF, so you can usually find something you like.

I also just discovered Barenaked Ladies, the album Stunt is pretty good.

[livejournal.com profile] trollprincess already mentioned Muse, but I thought I'd second that. 'Coma' and 'Hysteria' are great songs by them.

I've been loving The Shins lately. I'd definitely reccomend 'Kissing the Lipless' and 'Caring is Creepy'. Both are excellent songs.
