It is Alive!

An expensive data recovery later, I seem to be largely whole again. I've lost a handful of music and files, but nothing that I'd actually mourn much. The main thing is that my data files are fine. So, extensive work to do reorganizing everything this weekend, and then backing up everything with a properly configured program.

Honestly, for writing projects? I download/install dropbox on my laptop and save everything to the cloud. (though I don't mean to preach to the choir, especially now).

I learned this the hard way after replacing three harddrives in four months. I was so ready to tear my hair out after the last time... that I went from naming my HDDs "This Land" to "Your Grave". I think it's fitting. Haha.

You never really get religion about backups until you have a brush with Data Loss Death.

If you can, I'd think about having at least three backups on different media. Disk, USB and one on a portable hard drive, that way if one dies, you've always got two more. (It's a little paranoid, but not _that_ paranoid. I'd have suggested a RAID solution as well, but most regular people don't have home server set ups. :D )
