If you've been caught up in the Chik-Fil-A discussion, a common defense is that it is about the right of free expression and speech. This frames those protesting the chain and encouraging others to boycott doing so as opponents of Chik-Fil-A President Cathy's right to free expression. That he is being punished for his beliefs and faith. This is wrong.
The protest and boychott about Chik-Fil-A is not about restricting the rights of anyone to form and express an opinion, regardless of how repugnant or ignorant. It is about protesting the use of the chain as a source of funds for the Family Research Council and the Marriage & Family Foundation. If you're not familiar with those organizations, they strongly advocate the removal of rights and protections from LGBQT citizens of the United States. The FRC has gone so far as to advocate criminalizing homosexuality.
I want you to think about that for a second. This isn't about tolerance. This is about a chain and a brand being used to fund organizations that push for homosexuals to have less rights and freedoms than hetrosexuals. As the article states:
This isn’t about mutual tolerance because there’s nothing mutual about it. If we agree to disagree on this issue, you walk away a full member of this society and I don’t. There is no “live and let live” on this issue because Dan Cathy is spending millions to very specifically NOT let me live. I’m not trying to do that to him.
This is the core of the issue. It would be the equivalent of KFC funneling millions towards, say, white supremist groups looking to defranchise black Americans of their rights. Or McDonald's bankrolling anti-Muslim groups. It is not about Dan Cathy's right of expression and it is not about whether he has the right to do with his money as he wishes. It is about the fact that how he earns the means to support groups that espouse the restriction and removal of rights for homosexuals is a national chain, and by eating there, you are enabling him to continue to do so with your dollars.
That's the issue; your next set of waffle fries is a tacit donation to help efforts to make your gays friends less than people. I think they have a right to be fucked off about it.
