"If you don't mind, detective. I get light headed if I don't eat regularly. Low blood sugar. It's the cross I bear." Dr Andrews pulled the sheet aside, and set down his lunch on the mutilated corpse.

"Your victim was first restrained in the seated position. Gall marks on the wrists and ankles consistent with forced restraint. Handcuffs, I'd imagine, of the cheaper variety. There's some small metal particles in the marks, likely off of the metallic coating on such novelty items. The first incision was made laterally across the forehead, right to the bone. The wound was then pulled open further, likely to examine the bone for marks of brow bossing." He picked up a dull white square from his lunch bag, and pulled the wax paper from a jam sandwich.

"The second cut was along the jawline on the right side, again to the bone and the wound pulled open after completion. This is consistent with seeking signs of mandibular angle reduction or a sliding genioplasty. None of these where the cause of death, of course. The mutilation of the breasts, which described by your patrolman as ritualistic - I fear that young man watches too many of those police shows - is actually much simpler to explain. By removing the nipples in a circular plug, any artificial implants in the breasts would be immediately apparently." Andrews set down his sandwich and pointed to the relatively intact left breast. "No scarring either under the underswell of the mammary or running vertically downward from the aureole. The logic being that if she had implant surgery, the only way possible without leaving these signs would have been through the front, following the removal of the nipple."

Andrew's long fingers traversed the length of her pale, cold stomach, and stopped over the rents deeply carved into the flesh above her pubic bone. "The cause of death officially is blood loss resulting from damage to the anterior external iliac artery. The diagonal cuts and subsequent tearing to the skin and muscle of the lower abdominal and pubic region indicates the man used both his knife and fingers to explore the cuts he made, eventually going deep enough to pierce the artery." Andrews looked up from the body.

"As to your question, detective, the sexual assault took place posthumously. She would have been dead or at the very least unconscious from the loss of blood by the time he raped her." Andrews picked his sandwich up off the naked chest and took a delicate bite. "You see, detective, to prove he was a man, he had to first prove that she wasn't."
