I met Jeff coming down the rails into the bar by the subway. It had changed ownership five times in the last two years, from a pub to a taco house to a fish shack and a bar again. You got a face full of bean mackeral stink when you walked into the bathroom BLAM! right as the door opened. Jeff was puking up a sausage and a quart of boilermaker kettle bourbnon over the metal railing.

"fucking shit. I have to get those drinks back in me." He wiped his mouth with a meaty hand, drooling brown slime into his beard.

"you started already?" It was one. People at work said I was the biggest GODDAM drunk because I was at the bar by twelve, but he was already drunk. I wanted to be him already.

"ain't stopped. Fuck. Ever had a black man fuck you in the ass? I feel like that." He opened thw door for me.

"yeah?"

"I was working on a tobacco farm for the summer. Seventeen. Big ol' midnight from Altoona came into the roosthouse all hammered and thought I was his woman." He slammed his hands on the bar. "Whiskeys and beers! Yeah, I'm Jeff."

"okay." I poured tje beer into a glass and looked at it for a moment, and drank off half of it down.

"whiskey was once the drink of the royals." he bleched and emptied his shot. "Only kings and priests drank it."

"civilazation means we all get to drink like kings?"

"It makes everything shit level. Like books or sex. Everyone is apoet today, you know. But we all drink too much and want to fuck the drive thru girl."

"I think she's fifteen."

"the best you'll ever have." He drained his beer and handed ten dollars to Bombay Pete for a blowjob out in the alley.

I looked around the bar. No women. I did the next best thing, and drank my whiskey down.
