dexfarkin: (Doc)
I know, what's good news doing in this journal?

There have been some positive things this week despite my continuing lack of employment. First of all, the job market seems to be opening up a bit more now, as opposed to the last few months, which have been bleaker than the Jays playoff hopes. Fortunately, more positions are opening up, so there are some real potentially good openings appearing.

In addition, a good friend of mine has a very strong lead on some potentially lucrative freelance work. If I can land it, it seems that it should have enough work to at least allow me to scrape by for a while. Freelancing has usually led me to more opportunities as well, so I'm hopeful about it. Obviously, my biggest fear is ending back up where I started following college, in a basement level telemarketing gig that makes me want to kill myself on a daily basis. Having something that lets me hold off and wait for a job I want would help immensely.

My tax return came in, allowing me to pay back [livejournal.com profile] ferox the money I borrowed off her last month. Anyone who knows me knows I loathe borrowing money with every fiber of my being, and an unpaid debt gnaws at me until I can clear it.

Speaking of clearing away debt, yesterday I made the final payment on my student loans. After eight years, I've finally cleaned up just over thirty thousand dollars in debt. That is a huge step, since now the only money I owe in the world involves my credit card, which doesn't have a huge amount on it in any case.

In a totally unexpected boost, the Ontario government informed me that my EI benefits have been extended another five weeks, giving me another month of checks to tide me over. It's not huge money, but it gives me a little more breathing room to find something worthwhile.

But the big windfall, friends, is hinted at by my icon. Thanks to a friend of mine, and some slightly unethical dealing with a supplier, I should have a box seat ticket to the Toronto Blue Jays home opener. Free booze, free food, and a view fifteen feet up and behind home plate. All for taking the place of a friend and collecting some brochures and sales material about computer hardware.

I have never been to a home opener, especially not getting a ticket that would normally cost a couple hundred bucks to attend. It's also against the Detroit Tigers, the old archrival from the 80s, when the Jays and Tigers battled endlessly for the league record against each other. I believe it'll be Halladay verses Verlander as well, which is set to be an aces duel. Hopefully nothing falls through on this. I mean, I'm happy to listen to the game on the radio, but a chance to see it?

Wow.
